so i was thinking about how i wanted to write a blog about the intros on classic rap records and how they just don’t seem to have/make them like they used to … you know … that first track or intro piece that really grabs you, like that gnarly sh*t on PE’s Apocalypse ‘91 or “Shorty The Pimp” on the Too $hort record by the same name or some other sh*t i can’t think of right now because i thought about all this days ago and now i’m just moving on it but anyways i was looking up “Young Black Male” from the first 2pac record cause that sh*t is so ill and just blew my mind and i came across this video of a young Tup and Jada Pinkett dancing like hell to a Will “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” Smith song …. maybe y’all have seen this but i sure haven’t. peep:
is that ma f*ckin Keenan “Low Down Dirty Shame” Ivory Wayans hosting his own show?!?!? or am i tripping? that might be a blog of its own right there. anyways, here’s “Young Black Male” cause it is soooo dope.
one day i was talking to Low Leaf and i told her i thought she should do a cover of Complicated by Avril Lavigne. she scoffed at the idea. i said, yeah, Avril may be annoying or whatever, but the song is a perfect pop song and you should do a flip of it in your style. i couldn’t convince her so i said, f_ck it, i’m doing my own version of it. i played it out on the keyboard and recorded the vocals. it was pretty ridiculous but now i do it live cause its random as f_ck.
this was from 2008 and we had a show in paris that we crashed because we weren’t good enough to be on the bill. hahaha, proved you wrong again! people will never learn. anyway, we’re over here at J.B from dDamage’s house on some sippi-sippi and your boy waves “overdid it holmes, he had too much to drink…” and here is what went down. always a marketing whiz, he made this hoe a commercial……
your boy Huevos is still settling into his new place so his presence on the internet has been somewhat limited, shouts to all those i owe emails to. but in a quick slam-this-coffee-while-waiting-for-this-babe-to-wake-up moment i caught this on Mochipet’s blog. i was aware of this track (duh, i’m on it) but not its completion or the addition of Cadence Weapon!
basically, what we have here is a Mochipet beat featuring sick sick verses from myself, Spoek Mathambo (who cannot stop releasing projects, this guy is insane), Subtitle (who seems to be making up for lost time on his personal blog – dude been posting like a muhfucka), and CW.
UPDATE: this track is on Subtitle’s new EP La Cita Strobe (details above) which i did not know until a moment ago. stoked!!! make sure you check out the record, especially for the track Leggings, produced by MusSck. its an instant classic.
this is the trailer for the freight-themed graf video series my homeboy Maintane puts out. they usually have all kinds of cool shit in them like interviews, short films, music videos, etc. but this round is STRICTLY freight pics and footage.
as you can see, it features a lot of music from our lil family here.
Maintane also does some fresh screenprinting so make sure you check it out.
the homeys Islands came through to good ol’ Durham, NC and being the Briefcase Rocker that i am/friends of the fam …. i got to fill the shoes of the various rappers (including myself in the past) that have got to grace the stage for a rendition of Where There’s A Will There’s A Whalebone, the album version of which features Subtitle and Busdriver.
i tried to mimic Subtitle’s way of handling this guest spot (after watching many youtube versions of him doing it) by remaining sort of “in the cut” and not letting anyone know it was going to go down, and then just popping up at the last minute right before it’s time for me to rip.
i went to a side mic so that Nick could still have the main one for when he comes back in, but for some reason it was dead. turns out neither the in-house nor the touring sound man had any idea what was going on, and cut the mic as soon as i went for it, thinking i was a party crasher. i end up on the main mic and proceed to get tackled by the local sound guy, who attempts to drag me off the stage while i am just beginning to spit, causing me to space on my pre-prepared lyrics and launch into a freestyle, never missing a beat even as i am trying to shrug the guy off. i guess he realized the band was cool with what was happening and he lets it ride, and he gets quickly dissed in my free, which ends up being rather aggressive as well as laudatory to Islands, who were definitely killing their set. turns out the freestyle went over great, better than my written lyrics could have (just a random verse from a Huevos classic) and after watching as many versions of the song as i could earlier that day, i was able to get the timing down perfect and everyone went nuts. it was rad. i received many pats on the back as well as apologies from both sound men, though of course the fact that they tried to shut me down made the appearance way more crev and exciting for the audience, so i’m stoked that it went down like that.
but 5 seconds into the latest email from my hip hop homey Lockjaw, i was posting this video. let’s peep this together and talk some funny shit in the comments, shall we?
i really wanted to learn what absinthe was all about on this euro mission.
you can find it in most places, but the OG shit with a high wormwood content is only sold in a few countries. one of them is the Netherlands. i bought some. i drank some.
i didn’t go too deep this round, but i scratched the surface.
